Large Excavator Picking Rocks At Lakewalk Shoreline Restoration Large Excavator Picking Rocks At Lakewalk Shoreline Restoration

Earthwork

Project Overview

Due to severe storms, the Lakewalk Trail at Canal Park recently suffered a massive blow and has been in need of restoration. Veit was contracted by the City of Duluth to rebuild the lakewalk and install armor protection in anticipation of future weather events. Crews imported more than 150,000 tons of 5-12 ton boulders to install along the shoreline. These boulders were stacked along the new shorefront trail to protect it from harsh conditions. The project was completed on time and received an enormous amount of positive feedback from the public.

Challenges We Solved

01.
Specific Tolerances
The armoring installed along the trail called for very specific placement in order to properly protect the trail. The boulders used were placed to no less than 6” out of tolerance.
02.
Boardwalk Construction
The new boardwalks installed were constructed from a specialty Ipe wood decking. This decking, sourced from Brazil, is 8 times stronger than California Redwood and can last more than 20 years without preservatives. This dense material was incredibly tough to work with and required special tools and extensive care to create the perfect end result.
03.
Boulder Placement
With the specific placement plan for the armor protection, Veit wanted to ensure everything was placed effectively to reduce overhandling of material. This involved outfitting our 374 excavator, the largest in the fleet, to place these heavy boulders with precision and ease.
