Demolition

Project Overview

As part of a $600 million transformation project on the Marquette University Campus, a new recreation and wellness center is being built for the University’s student population. To make way for the new facility, Marquette contracted Veit & Company to abate and demolish the existing 13-story McCormick Hall dormitory building, dubbed “The Beer Can” for it’s curved architecture and squat appearance.

Timing was critical on this project in downtown Milwaukee, where an aggressive schedule was set by the owner to minimize disruption of university operations.  On a fast track, we had to perform demolition work simultaneously at different locations in order to expedite the process.

We used a wrecking ball to take down the structure, which meant meticulous attention to the site plan and diligent regard for safety standards in order to protect our crews, the public and the student body.

Challenges We Solved

01.
Tight Site - Tall Structure
To mitigate dust and debris, we hung custom-built 50’x100’ demolition screens, composed of chain-link fence and geotextile fabric. These screens were hung from mobile hydraulic cranes during structural demolition as well as from the building itself during the soft strip. At the base of the screen was a 13’ tall steel bang board that deflected any materials caught by the screen back onto the site rather than out into the public right-of-way.
02.
Risk of Using Ball and Chain
We created a very strict site-specific Health and Safety Plan catering to the circumstances of the demolition site, and operated by it for the entire course of the project without exception.
03.
Fast Track Schedule
We invested time prior to starting work in pre-demolition planning and a comprehensive health and safety plan.
